The Master's Degree in History and Philosophy of Arts focuses on the study of art and culture with an emphasis on fine arts, its history, theory and philosophy. This programme is divided into two modules, one focusing on the history of fine arts, the other on the philosophy of art, aesthetics, and general art theory. Both modules have a common basis where students study the basic categories of art theory, origins of the philosophy of art and development of art and photography in the 20th century.
In the art - historical module the students gain a deeper insight into the background of creation of art and architecture from the Middle Ages to the 20th century and become familiar with contemporary methodological approaches in their analysis and interpretation. Graduates will have deepened their knowledge of historiography and contemporary methodology of art history.
In the aesthetics - philosophical module, students specialize in the philosophy of art, respectively on how the modern art system in the context of the philosophical thinking of the Modern Period was formed. At the same time, their knowledge of the theory of individual forms of art that they acquired in Bachelor's programme. Attention will also be paid to border areas of art philosophy, such as the theory of popular art and environmental aesthetics.

Graduate profile

Graduates of the programme History and Philosophy of Art will be able to apply the acquired knowledge and skills in cultural institutions (museums, galleries, monument care, publishing houses, cultural agencies, etc.) or in the media, possibly also in state administration and self-government.
Defined by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs list of jobs, possible positions held by graduates could be for example the Curator of collections and furniture funds, thematic exhibitions curator or lecturer, conservationist, historical monument manager or documentalist, event organizer, public relation worker, editor - journalist, journalist or artistic production secretary.
Graduates of the Master's degree programme in History and Philosophy of Arts will be also prepared, besides the necessary and basic practical application of the theoretical knowledge, to pursue further education in Doctoral programmes within humanities, especially in the areas of aesthetics, philosophy, art history, other cultural studies.
