The course composition of the specialisation is based on the traditional model of philological studies with a focus on translation. It contains courses of a common translatological basis (Theory and History of Translation, Czech Stylistics, Computational Instruments for Translation Practice) and a wide range of specialised courses of linguistic and literary studies supplemented with a specialization component of optional courses. Emphasis - especially within functionally focused translation practical classes - is placed on the graduates' practical language competencies which form a significant added value on the labour market. The linguistic lectures focus on analysing the so-called higher levels of the language system (syntax and text), in line with the good practice of Master's philological disciplines of Czech universities. Within literary disciplines, the graduates will extend and deepen their knowledge of literary history and text work and, in accordance with modern trends, deal with Francophone literature written in French. In both areas, an overlap into translating practice is emphasized.

Graduates will have mastered French at level C2. They will be equipped with knowledge of history and theory of translation and familiar with modern computational and corpus linguistics techniques, including the use of CAT tools. They will be acquainted with modern methods of linguistic analysis (syntax, textual linguistics) and able to apply them in a contrastive perspective. They will be aware of the systemic differences between the two languages ​​(French and Czech) and will be able to choose adequate translation solutions based on well-founded language analysis. They will have mastered multiple translation procedures, both theoretically and practically and will have gained important competencies in the field of Czech stylistics, especially when it comes to choosing the resources typical of the individual functional styles.

The programme responds to labour market demands. Thanks to the dual specialisation, graduates will find many employment opportunities on the labour market. Graduates can find employment as translators in the private sphere and within national or European state (public) institutions. Thanks to their advanced linguistic, cultural and communication training, graduates will be able to find employment wherever a public or private employer requires a high level of linguistic knowledge, intercultural competences and independent, critical and creative thinking.
