The specialisation English language and literature provides students with the knowledge of English at C1 level and basic knowledge of English and American literature and linguistics. In addition to fundamental and overview courses, this specialisation also offers highly practical seminars (such as practical translating seminars) so that the graduates can effectively engage in the field of literature production (working in publishing houses etc.) or continue to further study and develop their academic careers. Main characteristics of the specialisation:

1. The aim of the programme is to offer students a well-grounded fundamental overview of English literature, American literature and English language studies.
2. The study of English language and literature is a dual specialisation programme paired with another specialisation offered at the University of South Bohemia in České Budějovice.
3. The aim of the programme is to provide students with a solid foundation in English grammar, basic knowledge of English literature and additional practical English language courses focused on the development of the students' spoken and written English language skills. This is followed by an offer of elective courses concentrated in the third final year of studies enabling the students to choose a linguistic or literary specialization It is assumed that the choice of this specialization will correspond to the choice of the subject of the student's Bachelor's thesis.
    

Bachelor's degree graduate will have reached level C1 according to the European Reference Framework in English, will be capable of independent philological work in the field of contemporary English and be equipped with practical skills for working with text and information, including translation, compilation and self-expression in written communication. Due to the broad base of the programme and emphasis on communication skills, the graduate will have gained considerable flexibility allowing them not only to continue in further studies or find employment within the publishing sector but also become an attractive potential employee for any sector of the commercial sphere focused on communication and work with information.

In literary courses the students acquire specialized language competences in the field of literary language as well as basic knowledge of literary science. They will also acquire an overview of English and American literature (Canadian, Australian and Irish literature will be selectively studied in the context of optional seminars according to the period to which the selected studied works belong) and practical translation competences. With such practical and theoretical knowledge and skills, the graduate will be able to find employment in fields requiring a deeper knowledge of English (receptive and spoken), for example in publishing houses, non-profit organizations, state administration offices, communication and media agencies or companies focused on international cooperation in the area of culture.

The graduate will have also completed a professional and business English course providing them with professional linguistic competence in the field of business, enabling them to communicate at a high level in the current international business environment. They can therefore easily find employment in assistant positions or in lower and middle management positions in the commercial sphere and government administration.
